Writing, like performing, has something to do with learning from experience and using what you have learned to grow into someone you have never been before. There are no magic formulas, systematic collection of effects, or a rigid, previously grounded concept. It is a process done by this person, in this time and place, with these means, and, at the same time, revealing someone we recognize.

“Ali and Nino” is a highly regarded novel that has been published in 33 languages since 1937 (including Braille). I obtained the stage adaptation rights with funding from the New York Foundation for the Arts. A Romeo and Juliet story, highlighting the romance between Ali Khan Shirvanshir, a young independent minded patriot from Azerbaijan, and Nino Kapinini, a bright, witty Christian girl from Georgia, the stage adaptation is timely, relevant, and reflective of events in the near East today. “Ali and Nino” uses a direct line of action, multiple casting, Azerbaijan music, projected imagery, dance, puppetry, and mime to heighten its theatrical impact.
